Mining

Understanding how teams recognize risks and how leaders back safety decisions in extraction, ore processing and operational support.

Context

The operation goes beyond the extraction front

Mining brings together very different work environments. Extraction, ore processing, material handling and maintenance each have their own pace and exposures. Warehouses, fueling and other support activities are also part of this routine and need to be included in any reading of the safety culture.

At the handoffs between areas, a decision can affect someone at another point in the operation. It is necessary to understand how information flows, how risks are discussed and who keeps track of conditions that require attention. Having a tool available is only part of this work.

Leadership practice deserves a close look: which situations reach managers, how do they respond to questions and what do they follow up on in the field? These choices help explain the gap between formal guidance and practice.

Our work

Examining responsibilities in each activity

The assessment considers the operation’s different audiences and environments. Conversations, observations and data help identify the issues that should guide planning, leadership development and the use of management tools.

Serious injury and fatality prevention can be part of this scope, with attention to how critical risks are understood and how controls are monitored. Priorities are set with the organization, respecting the characteristics of the sites and activities involved.
